DBS students immediately see and connect to a larger world around them, reading picture books, non-fiction and novels. The display is a fantastic representation of some of the DBS core values of internationalism and interculturalism, and students will be able to continue to educate themselves, creating a global respect for each other\u2019s differences and aspiring to change the future.<\/p>\n<p>All Are Welcome, by Alexandra Penfold (Picture book) This picture book describes a school where all kids are welcomed with open arms and respect is given to each student\u2019s differences in background, skin colour, and traditions, and the book examines the everyday commonalities that they share.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Kid, by Jerry Craft (Graphic Novel)<\/h3>\n<p>This book, which was the first graphic novel to win a Newbery Medal, follows Jordan Banks\u2014a black boy from Washington Heights, New York\u2014as he enrols in a school where he\u2019s one of the few kids of colour. It perfectly illustrates negative reactions, from both well-intentioned and not-so-well-intentioned peers, and also from teachers who make assumptions about the new kid based on his race and background.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson (Fiction)<\/h3>\n<p>Woodson\u2019s poetry explains what it was like to grow up black in the \u201960s and \u201970s, with a mounting awareness of the civil rights movement.
