My name is Ross Orton and I am the Head of Year 5 and 6. I also teach maths and humanities to Year 5 and Year 6 here at DBS. Along with my family, I have moved from a small town near Bristol in the UK to Thailand and we are very much enjoying our new surroundings.<\/span><\/h3>\n

I began my teaching career at a state primary school in London, where I became a Deputy Headteacher. During this time, I taught widely, all the way from Y1 to Y6 and led various subjects, such as maths, history, music and modern languages. I then moved to a Bristol school, where I was the Deputy Headteacher as well as the Special Educational Needs Coordinator, working with children in mainstream schools with a range of needs, from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to Autism Spectrum Disorder and complex medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of my main passions within education is inclusion and special needs \u2013 ensuring that all children have access to a high quality education. For this to happen, I believe that the child\u2019s voice is the most critical, and often overlooked, ingredient in successful learning. As children develop their sense of themselves as learners and work together with educators, it is important that they become aware of their strengths and develop skills and tools which they can use independently to overcome their weaknesses \u2013 we all have them!<\/span><\/p>\n

Our move abroad came from a desire to experience a new culture, visit beautiful parts of the world and to take on a challenge at a school which shares my values, with pastoral care at the forefront of teachers\u2019 minds. I have been very impressed by the talent and attitudes of the students here at DBS, the opportunities available to them and the passionate and highly capable staff who work with them each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In the classroom, I believe that students should feel safe to make mistakes and take risks. I often tell them that nothing makes me more happy than a wrong answer, because it\u2019s an opportunity to correct a misconception and move learning forwards. I also challenge children to use the positive language of growth mindset \u2013 \u201cI can\u2019t do this\u201d becomes \u201cI can\u2019t do this YET\u201d! The brilliant students in Y5 and Y6 are rising to this challenge in our lessons and it has been a pleasure to get to know them.<\/span><\/p>\n
