We are delighted to share that Anna N., a Year 10 student at DBS Denla British School, has been selected as a finalist in the Best Student Film category of the ARFF Berlin International Awards 2024 for her short film, The Wonders of the Rhinoceros Hornbill.
ARFF Berlin is an internationally recognised film festival that celebrates outstanding achievements in independent filmmaking across various genres, including student films, documentaries, and experimental shorts. Each year, the festival receives submissions from around the world and selects exceptional entries to be shortlisted. Anna’s film has proudly earned a place among these finalists, showcasing not only her creativity but also her commitment to environmental storytelling.

About the Film
In her compelling short documentary, Anna takes viewers deep into the lush Hala-Bala rainforest in Narathiwat, Thailand’s southernmost province. There, she meets a devoted local Muslim conservationist who has spent years studying hornbills and leading youth conservation initiatives in the region. He guides Anna through the forest on a journey to track the elusive rhinoceros hornbill, while also sharing the history of conservation efforts in the area and the perspectives of the local community.
Anna supports her fieldwork with academic research, exploring the behaviour, habitat, ecology, and international conservation status of the rhinoceros hornbill. However, the most impactful part of her experience came from her conversations with local villagers, which revealed a crucial truth: community involvement is essential for successful conservation.
Upon returning to the city, Anna interviewed zoological experts about ex-situ conservation efforts. While these initiatives aim to breed hornbills in captivity, the experts noted the ongoing challenges of reintroducing them into the wild—challenges that underscore the need to protect natural habitats and empower the people who live closest to them.
One local’s words remained with her:
“Conservation can only succeed when the local community is involved.”
This idea became the heart of her film.

A Global Platform for a Local Message
Anna’s selection as a finalist at ARFF Berlin 2024 is not only a recognition of her filmmaking talent, but also a celebration of her passion for conservation. The film amplifies the voices of those on the front lines of ecological protection and highlights the power of collaboration between humans and nature.
She stands among an impressive cohort of young filmmakers from around the globe, all using their platforms to raise awareness and provoke thought on issues that matter.
