Music

The Music Department at DBS plays a crucial part in each students’s development in their academic career. Our curriculum offers students opportunities to express themselves in a respectful, sharing environment, while creative and sharing-based approaches in our teaching allow students to develop in confidence when making and sharing music. Within DBS are a wide range of platforms for students to showcase and demonstrate their musical talent and ability to friends, parents and the wider community. These include formal and informal recitals, large-scale musical productions, lunchtime concerts and community outreach performances.

Here at DBS, we aim to provide every student the opportunity to maximise their creative artistic potential, whilst allowing them the challenge of pursuing a high level of technical finesse on their respective instrument. Every student from Early Years to Key Stage 4 receive weekly specialist music teaching and are involved in at least one large-scale musical event on stage annually. For Key Stage 5, we offer the Pearson Edexcel GCSE 9-1 Music course, which is well-received and sought after by students as a subject option.

We also provide a comprehensive peripatetic teaching provision, allowing students to further their instrumental development in a one-to-one setting. Our choirs also participate in outreach events, spreading the joy of singing in the local area. Seasonal musicals and nativity plays add a focus to the Prep School co-curricular programme on a yearly basis, with the whole school production taking place every two years.

Ensembles and groups in DBS include two orchestras, three choirs for the different age groups across the school, a string quintet and a wind band. We also offer attractive and rewarding Music scholarships, which are awarded following a rigorous assessment process.
