Celebrating Piano Talent Across Schools:

WELCOMING PRE-PRIMARY, PRIMARY & SECONDARY STUDENTS AGED 4 AND ABOVE

There are two stages to the Denla Piano Competition. The preliminary round will consist of pre-recorded video submissions. From these submissions, our adjudicator will select the most capable performers to progress through to the final round: a live concert performance taking place on Thursday, 20 June 2024, 4.00pm at the purpose-built Araya Hall in DBS Denla British School.

All students aged 4 and above who are studying in any school in Thailand are welcome to participate in the Denla Piano Competition 2024.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY : COMPETITION CATEGORIES

Category A (4 to 7 years old)

  • For students who were born between 02 April 2017 and 01 April 2020
  • No requirements for standard of performance
  • Preliminary round performance can be up to 3 minutes long
  • Participants may perform more than one piece, but their total performance time cannot exceed 3 minutes
  • The registration fee for this category is THB 990,- per participant

Category B (8 to 12 years old)

  • For students who were born between 02 April 2011 and 01 April 2017
  • Recommended standard of performance should be at least of the following levels:
    • ABRSM Grade 3, or
    • Trinity Grade 3, or
    • Yamaha Grade 11
  • Preliminary round performance can be up to 5 minutes long
  • Participants may perform more than one piece, but their total performance time cannot exceed 5 minutes
  • The registration fee for this category is THB 990,- per participant

Category C (13 years and above)

  • For students who were born on 01 April 2011 or earlier
  • Recommended standard of performance should be at least of the following levels:
    • ABRSM Grade 5, or
    • Trinity Grade 5, or
    • Yamaha Grade 9
  • Preliminary round performance can be up to 7 minutes long
  • Participants may perform more than one piece, but their total performance time cannot exceed 7 minutes
  • The registration fee for this category is THB 1290,- per participant

HOW TO ENTER THE COMPETITION?

Participants must submit their recorded performance for the preliminary round via this Registration Form. Entries are open until 5.00 PM on Wednesday, 01 May 2024.

Their chosen piano piece(s) can be of any musical style, from classical, to jazz, to pop.

There will be a registration fee of THB 990,- per participant for Categories A and B, and a registration fee of THB 1290,- per participant for Category C. Please scroll to the bottom for instructions on how to pay the fee.

For the preliminary round, all participants will be judged according to a set criteria, and be awarded one of the following based on their attained score:

  • Commendation
  • Higher commendation
  • Commendation of exceptional performance

All participants will also receive a certificate and medal which reflect their level of Commendation.

Requirements for your video submission:

  1. The participant must clearly state their name, age, school and category entered before their performance 
  2. There is no extra credit given for performing from memory
  3. Musical repeats should be avoided in both rounds unless they are necessary
  4. Edits and cuts while you are playing are not permitted; it must be one continuous video
  5. The video should be one file and not larger than 2GB when submitted

ADJUDICATORS

DBS is delighted to introduce our esteemed panel of adjudicators for this year’s competition. They include internationally acclaimed pianists and music educators from Thailand and around the world.

THE FINAL

In accordance with the judging criteria, the adjudicators will choose a limited number of participants from each category to progress through to the final, which will be hosted live in DBS’s newly opened auditorium on Thursday, 20 June 2024, 4.00 pm.

Finalists may choose to perform a different piece in concert, and may also choose to perform more than one piece. Performing the same piece from the preliminary round is also allowed. However, their total performance time should not exceed their respective category’s time limit. See below for details on each category’s time limit for the final round.

All finalists need to submit a copy of the musical score for the final performance to DBS Denla British School at least three days before the final round, for the adjudicators’ use.

The list of finalists for all categories will be announced online on
Friday, 31 May 2024 at 5.00 PM.

Category A

  • Four finalists will be selected from Category A to perform at the final
  • Each finalist in Category A will be given a maximum of 4 minutes for their live performance onstage.

Category B

  • Four finalists will be selected from Category B to perform at the final.
  • Each finalist in Category B will be given a maximum of 7 minutes for their live performance onstage.

Category C

  • Four finalists will be selected from Category C to perform at the final.
  • Each finalist in Category C will be given a maximum of 10 minutes for their live performance onstage.

PRIZES

All participants in the Denla Piano Competition 2024 will receive a certificate of commendation and a medal, awarded at different levels depending on their performance.

At the end of the final round, the following finalists’ prizes will be will be awarded per Category:

  • Grand Prize (first prize) – A certificate signed by the adjudicating panel, a trophy and a medal will be presented. Your name will be engraved in a permanent installation at DBS.
  • The Virtuoso Prize (first runner-up) – A certificate, trophy and medal will be presented.
  • The Pinnacle Achievement Prize (second runners-up) – A certificate, trophy and medal will be presented.

OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

  • Adjudicators in all rounds of the competition will be independent and will have no link to the Denla group of schools.
  • Family and friends of all participants as well as members of the public are welcome to attend the final round on Thursday, 20 June 2024. There is no cost to attend, but spaces may be limited. There will be an opportunity to RSVP closer to the date of the final.
  • The registration fee should be paid by bank transfer or PromptPay. Kindly please attach a copy of the payment transfer slip when completing the registration form. Please see below for details regarding the bank account.
