Mary’s career has reflected her passion for teaching and learning, willingness to embrace challenges, and commitment to achieving success, as well as ensuring that our students and staff are committed to achieving throughout their lives, in whatever capacity this may be.
Mary was born and grew up in Cheshire in the North West of England. When she reflected on her childhood, she said that she loved everything about school, especially the community aspect of it. She also embraced every opportunity to participate in as many extracurricular activities as she could, from ballet to athletics. She was an avid athlete from then to now, and she was initially interested in pursuing a career as a sports psychologist. At Brighton University, she studied Sports Science and through involvement in the dance department, she discovered that she could train as a teacher specialising in contemporary dance.
“My dissertation was an investigation into the representation of female athletes in the media,” Mary said thinking about the time she was a university student. “I learned that I was capable of more than I realised and that working hard and pursuing your passions are key to both success and enjoyment in life.”
Mary didn’t expect to pursue her career as a teacher, but her love of dancing and her desire to help and inspire others drew her in that direction. She started teaching as the first specialist dance teacher in a large co-educational comprehensive school in 2000. Under her supervision, the GCSE dance group grew from 7 to 84 students in one year, which was a very exciting time in her career where she was able to set up a dance company and become an Advanced Skills Teacher, training and supporting dance teachers and students all over England.
She later became Head of Sixth Form at a specialist Performing Arts school in Kent, where she ran a dance department. She became the Deputy Head in charge of Teaching and Learning at St Michael’s Prep School in 2014.
“Prep School life is incredibly exciting and I have embraced the chance to work with students of this age who inspire me with their energy and enthusiasm for life! I was Acting Head at St Michael’s in 2020 and led the school through lockdowns and remote learning which was a great challenge,” she said referring to her recent experience leading the school during the Covid-19 lockdowns in England where she was there to ensure that the community stayed connected and engaged.
Mary met her husband, Ben Bridges, at a school where they both worked in Kent in 2007. After two years of working together, they took an eight-month trip around the world, returning in 2010 to marry in France. They have a beautiful border collie dog named Winnie and who is joining them in Thailand!
“I am proud of making the curriculum at St Michael’s forward thinking and innovative and it gives me great joy to see the pupils progress to senior school with the confidence and skills to thrive in the next steps of their educational journey.”
“Happy, determined, and positive” are three words she and others would use to describe her, but her husband describes her as an inspirational, fun, ray of sunshine!
She is, indeed, a ray of sunshine who enjoys soaking up the sun. Mary and Ben, who is also the newly appointed Head of PE at DBS, have a shared passion for running and have traveled the world competing in Half Marathons and Marathons. They also enjoy traveling and are looking forward to exploring more of Southeast Asia in the coming years.
Mary is also interested in dance and the arts, and she enjoys going to the theater. Many of her former students grew up and performed in London’s infamous West End, and she enjoys watching them and feels very proud that she had been a part of their journey through her years of teaching dance.
Aside from extracurricular activities that lead to her passions and skills, Mary and her husband are also big supporters of the Sam West Foundation, which raises awareness of mental health in young people. “It is a vital cause and we are both committed to better support for the mental health of students and young people,” she said.
Mary’s aspiration in life stems from her desire for others to remember her as someone who inspired them. At the same time, her ethos is influenced by her surroundings.
“I am inspired by the children I teach. The resilience and grit that some of them have shown in the face of challenge is incredible,” Mary said of her students. She recalled a time when one of her former students, Lucy, was involved in a terrible accident at the age of 10 and had to be rescued by an air ambulance on New Year’s Eve. Lucy recovered remarkably well, both physically and mentally, and with determination to help others, she went on to plan some charity work for the air ambulance that had saved her. Mary said she was proud to be in a position to help and support, and they raised a lot of money. The story simply demonstrates how capable our children are.
“How you do anything is how you do everything,” Mary quoted this as her personal motto. “We are all capable of far more than we realise. My greatest hope is that I can inspire children to go out and make the world a better place.”
Along with her career paths, Mary has many roles and responsibilities. Her teaching colleagues would describe her as ‘calm, committed, caring, a good listener, and a problem solver’. Parents would describe her as ‘knowledgeable, helpful and reassuring’ where she enjoys getting to know the parents and working together to ensure the best outcomes for the children. And for students, Mary was certain that they would describe her as ‘happy, kind, and inspiring’ because they have recently told her in her leaving cards!
As she said her goodbyes to her old school, she was eager to greet and meet everyone at DBS. She stated that before coming to DBS, she felt a strong connection with the school because its values aligned with her own educational ethos and it stood out as a school that will continue to grow, thrive, and achieve great things.
As the Head of Prep, she believes that children’s growth and journey in the Prep School can truly define their outlook and mindset. The habits that children form in Prep School can have a significant impact on their values for education and life.
“I hope that the children will be excellent communicators, kind, helpful and confident young people who are genuinely excited about learning for life. And I am excited to develop the leadership opportunities available to the children as they progress through the Prep School,” Mary said about her goal at DBS.
She concluded that in order for children to succeed, they need to develop skills alongside knowledge and DBS must provide the most exciting opportunities to combine knowledge and skill development for students.
“Children need to be able to solve problems, think creatively and critically and to work collaboratively with others. We want children to be excited about facing challenges, if something doesn’t challenge you then it doesn’t change you,” Mary said.
“The development of mindset within the Prep School will set pupils up to tackle any kind of test – whether it be academic, physical, social or creative, with the best chance to get the most out of the process. Prep School is a key phase in a long journey of learning through life so developing the best mindset to embrace and enjoy the process is absolutely essential.”
During the Covid-19 pandemic at the start of 2020, Mary had led her previous school during this challenging time, and she continues to do so at DBS. Despite obstacles, she has discovered that her role has positive potential, regardless of the circumstances that surround it.
“I think that the Prep School pupils will be extremely well equipped to succeed going forwards as they are developing skills of independent learning that pupils in the past did not have a chance to work on,” Mary said. “I noticed in my old school that the children came back from remote learning able to self-start, self motivate and embrace the struggle to find solutions themselves. This is extremely exciting.”
As the Head of Prep School at DBS, Mary has promised to ensure that the DBS community stays connected and engaged, and that students, parents, and staff are committed to achieving throughout their lives, in whatever capacity this may be.
“I am truly passionate about making school life happy for the children. I am hardworking and committed to creating a unique and high quality educational experience to ensure that the children are prepared to thrive throughout school and life beyond.”

คุณแมรี่เกิดและเติบโตที่แคว้น Cheshire ทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศอังกฤษ คุณแมรี่เล่าย้อนไปถึงวัยเด็กของเธอว่า เธอรักทุกอย่างเกี่ยวกับโรงเรียน โดยเฉพาะเรื่องความเป็นชุมชนภายในโรงเรียน เธอยังเปิดโอกาสให้ตัวเองได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมนอกหลักสูตรให้ได้มากที่สุดเท่าที่เธอทำได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการเรียนบัลเล่ต์อย่างอ่อนช้อยหรือการเป็นนักกีฬาที่แข็งแรง และจากอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันคุณแมรี่ก็ได้ให้ความสนใจเป็นพิเศษเกี่ยวกับอาชีพด้านจิตวิทยาการกีฬา คุณแมรี่ศึกษาหลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตร์การกีฬาที่มหาวิทยาลัย Brighton และที่นั่นเองที่เธอได้มีร่วมมีประสบการณ์จากฝ่ายนาฏศิลป์ ซึ่งมันทำให้เธอค้นพบตัวตนของตัวเองว่าเธอสามารถฝึกเป็นครูผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านนาฏศิลป์ร่วมสมัย หรือ การเต้นร่วมสมัยได้
“ฉันเขียนวิทยานิพนธ์เกี่ยวกับบทบาทของนักกีฬาเพศหญิงที่มีต่อสื่อมวลชน” คุณแมรี่เล่าถึงสมัยที่เธอยังเป็นนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยนั้น “ฉันพบว่าฉันมีความสามารถมากกว่าที่ตัวเองคิด และการมีความมุ่งมั่นตั้งใจทำตามความต้องการอันแรงกล้าของตนเองนั้นคือกุญแจสู่ทั้งความสำเร็จและพึงพอใจในชีวิต”
คุณแมรี่ไม่ได้คาดว่าตนเองจะเดินบนเส้นทางสายอาชีพครู แต่เนื่องด้วยความรักในการเต้น และความปรารถนาที่จะช่วยเหลือและสร้างแรงบันดาลใจแก่ผู้อื่น กลายเป็นแรงดึงดูดให้เธอเลือกเดินเส้นทางสายอาชีพนี้ี โดยเธอเริ่มจากการเป็นครูผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการเต้นคนแรกที่โรงเรียนสหศึกษาขนาดใหญ่แห่งหนึ่งในปี 2543 ซึ่งภายใต้การดูแลของเธอ จำนวนกลุ่มนักเรียนการเต้น GCSE ก็เติบโตอย่างก้าวกระโดด โดยภายในระยะเวลา 1 ปี นักเรียนของเธอที่มีเพียง 7 คนก็เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 84 คน ช่วงเวลานั้นเป็นช่วงเวลาที่น่าตื่นเต้นในอาชีพของเธอ คุณแมรี่ยังได้ก่อตั้งบริษัทของตนเอง เลื่อนตำแหน่งเป็นครูผู้สอนทักษะขั้นสูง และทำการจัดฝึกอบรมแก่ทั้งครูผู้สอนการเต้น และนักเรียนทั่วประเทศอังกฤษ
หลังจากนั้น คุณแมรี่ได้เลื่อนตำแห่งขึ้นเป็นหัวหน้าฝ่าย Sixth Form ดูแลในส่วนของแผนกการเต้น ที่โรงเรียนศิลปะการแสดงเฉพาะทางแห่งหนึ่งในเมือง Kent
ในปี 2557 เธอได้เข้ารับตำแหน่งรองหัวหน้าฝ่ายการบริหารจัดการเรื่องการสอนและ การเรียนรู้ที่โรงเรียน St Michael’s Prep School
“ชีวิตในรั้วโรงเรียน Prep School นั้นเป็นชีวิตที่น่าตื่นเต้นอย่างเหลือเชื่อ และฉันก็ได้เปิดโอกาสให้ตัวเองได้ทำงานกับนักเรียนในวัยนี้ ซึ่งพลังและความกระตือรือร้นของนักเรียนได้สร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่ฉัน! ในปี 2563 ฉันเข้ารับตำแหน่งเป็นรักษาการครูใหญ่ที่โรงเรียน St Michael’s Prep School ในช่วงที่ประเทศอังกฤษล๊อคดาวน์ ซึ่งภายใต้การบริหารของฉัน ฉันได้นำพาโรงเรียนฝ่าฝันอุปสรรคในช่วงล๊อคดาวน์ และจัดให้มีการเรียนการสอนแบบออนไลน์ ซึ่งสิ่งนี้นับว่าสิ่งที่ท้าทายมาก” เธอกล่าวถึงประสบการณ์ของเธอในการบริหารโรงเรียนในช่วงที่ประเทศอังกฤษล๊อคดาวน์เนื่องจากการแพร่ระบาดของไวรัสโควิด-19 ซึ่งเธอได้สร้างความเชื่อมั่นให้เกิดขึ้นภายในชุมชนของโรงเรียนผ่านการสื่อสารและมีส่วนร่วมในชุมชนอย่างต่อเนื่อง
“ฉันภูมิใจที่ได้จัดทำหลักสูตรหลักการคิดนอกกรอบและนวัตกรรมใหม่ ๆ ให้แก่โรงเรียน St Michael’s Prep School และสิ่งนี้ทำให้ฉันมีความสุขมากที่ได้เห็นนักเรียนเปี่ยมไปด้วยความเชื่อมั่นในตนเอง มีทักษะรอบด้านและพัฒนาการพร้อมก้าวเข้าสู่การศึกษาระดับ Senior School”
คุณแมรี่พบกับคุณเบน บริดเจส สามีของเธอเมื่อปี 2550 ที่โรงเรียนที่ทั้งสองเคยทำงานร่วมกันในเมือง Kent หลังจากนั้น 2 ปี ทั้งสองได้ตัดสินใจเดินทางไปท่องเที่ยวทั่วโลกนาน 8 เดือนด้วยกัน และทั้งคู่ได้แต่งงานกันในปี 2553 ที่ประเทศฝรั่งเศสหลังจบทริปการเดินทาง ทั้งคู่เลี้ยงสุนัขพันธุ์บอร์เดอร์ คอลลี่ ชื่อว่า วินนี่ และ วินนี่ก็ได้ติดตามทั้งคู่มาอยู่ที่ประเทศไทยด้วย!
“มีความสุข มุ่งมั่น และ คิดบวก” สามคำนี้คือคำที่คุณแมรี่และคนที่รู้จักเธอจะใช้บรรยายลักษณะนิสัยของเธอ อย่างไรก็ตามสามีของแมรี่กลับบรรยายถึงเธอว่า เธอเป็นผู้ที่เต็มไปด้วยแรงบันดาลใจ สนุกสนานร่าเริง และเป็นดั่งแสงอาทิตย์ที่เปล่งประกาย!
ถ้าให้กล่าวตามจริง คุณแมรี่ก็เป็นดั่งแสงอาทิตย์ที่เปล่งประกายจริง ๆ เพราะเธอมักจะเพลิดเพลินไปกับการตากแดดและทำกิจกรรมกลางแจ้ง ทั้งคุณแมรี่และคุณเบน ซึ่งคุณเบนได้รับการแต่งตั้ังให้เป็นหัวหน้าฝ่ายวิชาพละคนใหม่ที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS ทั้งสองนั้นมีกิจกรรมที่ชอบร่วมกันคือ การวิ่ง ซึ่งทั้งสองมักจะเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมการวิ่งฮาล์ฟมาราธอนและมาราธอนที่จัดขึ้นทั่วโลก พวกเขายังรักการเดินทางด้วย ดังนั้นทั้งคู่จึงวางแผนที่จะเดินทางท่องเที่ยวทั่วภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เช่นกัน

แรงผลักดันในชีวิตของแมรี่เกิดจากความปรารถนาของเธอที่ต้องการให้คนอื่นจดจำเธอในฐานะคนที่เป็นผู้สร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่พวกเขา ในขณะเดียวกันสิ่งที่เธอให้คุณค่าก็มาจากผู้คนรอบตัวเธอเองด้วย
“แรงบันดาลใจของฉันได้มาจากนักเรียนที่ฉันสอน ความพยายามและความเข้มแข็งที่นักเรียนได้แสดงออกมาเมื่อยามที่ต้องเผชิญกับความท้าทายนั้นเป็นอะไรที่น่าทึ่งมาก” คุณแมรี่กล่าวถึงนักเรียนของเธอ คุณแมรี่ยังได้เล่าถึงนักเรียนคนหนึ่งของเธอในวัย 10 ปีที่ชื่อว่า “ลูซี่” โดยลูซี่ประสบอุบัติเหตุร้ายแรงในวันก่อนวันขึ้นปีใหม่จนต้องได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากหน่วยพยาบาลทางอากาศ อย่างไรก็ตามลูซี่สามารถฟื้นตัวได้เร็ว ทั้งทางสภาพร่างกายและจิตใจ และด้วยความมุ่งมั่นที่ลูซี่มีในการที่จะช่วยเหลือผู้อื่น ลูซี่จึงตัดสินใจทำงานเป็นจิตอาสาแก่หน่วยพยาบาลเคลื่อนที่ทางอากาศที่ครั้งหนึ่งหน่วยนี้เคยได้ช่วยชีวิตเธอไว้ คุณแมรี่กล่าวว่า เธอรู้สึกภูมิใจที่ได้ช่วยเหลือและสนับสนุนลูกศิษย์ของเธอ ซึ่งในงานครั้งนั้นพวกเขาก็สามารถเรี่ยไรเงินบริจาคได้จำนวนมาก เรื่องทั้งหมดที่เล่ามานั้นแสดงให้เห็นว่าเด็ก ๆ เหล่านี้มีความสามารถเพียงใด

ตลอดระยะเวลาของการเป็นคุณครู คุณแมรี่มีบทบาทหน้าที่และความรับผิดชอบที่แตกต่างกันออกไป เพื่อนร่วมงานของเธอบรรยายว่าเธอว่าเป็นคน “สุขุม มุ่งมั่น เอาใจใส่ เป็นผู้ฟัง และผู้แก้ปัญหาที่ดี” ส่วนของผู้ปกครอง คุณแมรี่ก็เป็นที่รู้จักในฐานะครูที่ “มีความรู้ความสามารถ ชอบให้ความช่วยเหลือ และไว้ใจได้” คุณแมรี่ชอบทำความรู้จัก และทำงานร่วมกันกับผู้ปกครองเพื่อให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสูดแก่นักเรียน ซึ่งทางด้านของนักเรียน คุณแมรี่ก็มั่นใจว่าเด็ก ๆ จะต้องบรรยายบุคลิกของเธอว่า “มีความสุข ใจดี และเต็มไปด้วยแรงบันดาลใจ” ที่บอกแบบนี้ก็เพราะว่านักเรียนเขียนมาในการ์ดอวยพรที่ส่งให้ครูของพวกเขาก่อนที่แมรี่จะออกจากโรงเรียนเก่าของเธอ
หลังจากที่เธอได้โบกมือลาบ้านหลังเก่าของเธอและเริ่มต้นบทบาทใหม่ที่ DBS ตอนนี้เธอก็ตื่นเต้นที่จะพบและทักทายทุก ๆ คนที่นี่ เธอกล่าวว่าก่อนหน้าที่จะมา DBS เธอสัมผัสได้ถึงความสัมพันธ์อันเหนียวแน่นระหว่างเธอและโรงเรียน เนื่องจากค่านิยมของโรงเรียนนั้นสอดคล้องกับจริยธรรมทางการศึกษาของเธอ และ DBS ยังเป็นโรงเรียนที่โดดเด่นและมุ่งมั่นจะเติบโตไปอย่างมั่นคงและแข็งแกร่ง เพื่อความความสำเร็จที่ยิ่งใหญ่ต่อไปในอนาคต

“ฉันหวังว่าเด็ก ๆ จะเป็นผู้สื่อสารที่ยอดเยี่ยม มีจิตใจดี รู้จักช่วยเหลือกันและกัน และเป็นผู้ที่มีความมั่นใจ รักในการขวนขวายหาความรู้ และฉันเองก็ตื่นเต้นที่จะได้ช่วยพัฒนาพวกเขาให้เติบโตและมีโอกาสพัฒนาทักษะความเป็นผู้นำผ่านการเรียนชั้น Prep School นี้” คุณแมรี่กล่าวถึงเป้าหมายของเธอที่โรงเรียน DBS
เธอสรุปว่าการที่จะทำให้เด็ก ๆ ประสบความสำเร็จได้นั้น พวกเขาจำเป็นต้องพัฒนาทักษะควบคู่ไปกับความรู้ และ DBS ต้องมอบโอกาสอันแสนตื่นเต้นนี้ คือการผสมผสานความรู้และการพัฒนาทักษะเข้าไว้ด้วยกันให้แก่นักเรียน

“นักเรียนจะได้พัฒนามุมมองต่อสิ่งต่าง ๆ ในช่วงชั้น Prep School ซึ่งสิ่งนี้จะทำให้นักเรียนสามารถรับมือได้กับทุกบททดสอบที่ผ่านเข้ามา ทั้งด้านวิชาการ กายภาพ สังคม หรือ ด้านการสร้างสรรค์ และพวกเขาก็จะสามารถรับมือได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม ชั้น Prep School นั้นคือช่วงเวลาสำคัญของการเรียนรู้ ดังนั้นสิ่งที่สำคัญและจำเป็นที่สุด คือการพัฒนามุมมองของเด็ก ๆ และให้พวกเขาได้สนุกสนานไปกับการเรียนรู้”
