Praising the Process

“It was not the ‘what’ it was the ‘how’ that was all important.”

Mr Bridges’ article ‘The ‘Winning’ illusion’ mentions the training of soldiers and I was suddenly transported back in time to a particularly tough training session where the scenario was set up where we simply could not achieve the task. We had the resources and the determination but just as we were about to finish a new challenge was put in our way. Sometimes we were taken back to the start for some reason, some seemed true, some did not. My team was highly praised that day simply based on effort and determination alone. The officer in charge – a person of few words – said at the end ‘it was not the ‘what’ it was the ‘how’ that was all important.

Fifteen years later I am now in a Business Studies lesson with my Year 10s. They are a bright, energetic and relatively fearless group; I have incredibly high ambitions for them. I set them a quiz that got harder the further they got. I expected them all to finish but one student’s records showed something a little different. For this article, I am going to call them Ham. Ham’s record showed her first attempt she scored 2 out of 8. It was, no doubt, a great attempt. Attempt two showed 3 out of 8, I admired the fact that she had had another go and had evidence of improvement. Attempt three, though, was the greatest improvement of them all.

It is here that there is the danger to focus on the final score from Ham. It was an impressive one and one she should be proud of, what, though, makes Ham an exceptional student is the how. On the first attempt, Ham read through the task and attempted the questions. She, though, was not comfortable with her level of understanding and so did some more tasks to build on her learning. She then gave the quiz another go. She knew she had improved but still felt unsure in some areas. She then went away and did some different tasks which communicated the information in a different way. She attempted the task again and then turned her attention to the other things she had to do that day. 

Ham’s hour proved to be a chance to have an incredible insight into our superb Year 10s. The danger will always be to focus on the end score, it is what goes on University and job applications after all. World class universities and the best jobs now are getting wise to the importance of how candidates get there and the value of determination, resilience, reflection and perseverance seems to increase everyday. The great news is that these values are very inclusive; everyone can obtain them and there is not a mention of Intelligence Quotes or current grades in sight.

Ham’s win here, therefore, is about her process; her understanding of learning zones; her ability to reflect on her knowledge; her initiative to take action to fill in those gaps; her hunger to improve and her resilience to not let a few attempts (that may not have gone they way she expected) decrease her desire to learn. She is a wonderful student and one I am proud to have in the student body. She is not alone in being wonderful and it is also with considerable pride that I reflect upon the many examples I could have chosen showing students firmly on the pathway to fulfilling their potential. 

One question remained when the lesson finished: what’s holding others back from achieving their Ham moments? The answer for so many of us is quite simple: absolutely nothing.

‘มันไม่ใช่ว่าเราได้ ‘อะไร’ แต่เราได้มันมา ‘อย่างไร’ ต่างหากที่สำคัญที่สุด’ 

หลังจากที่ผมได้อ่านบทความของคุณเบน บริดเจส เรื่อง ‘ภาพลวงตาของชัยชนะ’ ที่เบนพูดถึงวิธีการฝึกทหารในกองทัพ เรื่องนี้ทำให้ผมนึกย้อนไปถึงสมัยที่ผมเป็นทหารและได้ร่วมฝึกซ้อมในกองทัพครั้งหนึ่ง ครั้งนั้นเป็นการฝึกที่ยากลำบากและทีมของผมก็ไม่สามารถทำภารกิจให้สำเร็จได้ เรามีทั้งความสามารถและความตั้งใจแต่เมื่อตอนที่เราจะใกล้ทำภารกิจสำเร็จกลับมีอุปสรรคใหม่เข้ามาขวางทางจนได้ บางครั้งเราถูกดึงกลับไปที่จุดเริ่มต้นด้วยเหตุผลบางอย่าง อย่างไรก็ตามทีมของผมได้รับคำชมมากมายในวันนั้นโดยเฉพาะเรื่องความพยายามและความมุ่งมั่นของพวกเรา เจ้าหน้าที่ที่รับผิดชอบในการฝึกซ้อมครั้งนั้นเป็นคนพูดน้อย แต่เขากลับพูดประโยคหนึ่งที่สำคัญมากกับเราหลังจบภารกิจว่า ‘มันไม่ใช่ว่าเราได้ ‘อะไร’ แต่เราได้มันมา ‘อย่างไร’ ต่างหากที่สำคัญที่สุด’ 

15 ปีต่อมา ตอนนี้ผมสอนวิชาธุรกิจศึกษาให้กับนักเรียนชั้น Y10 ของผม พวกเขาเป็นนักเรียนที่ฉลาด กระฉับกระเฉง และกล้าหาญ ซึ่งมันทำให้ผมรู้สึกอยากสอนพวกเขาให้เก่งขึ้นไปกว่านี้อีก ผมให้แบบทดสอบที่ยากขึ้นกับพวกเขาและผมก็คาดว่าเด็ก ๆ จะสามารถทำมันได้สำเร็จ แต่ผลลัพธ์ของนักเรียนคนหนึ่งแสดงผลที่แตกต่างออกไป สำหรับบทความนี้ ผลขอตั้งชื่อบทความว่า ‘แฮม’ โดยผลคะแนนของแฮมในความพยายามครั้งแรก เธอได้ 2 คะแนนจากคะแนนเต็ม 8 ซึ่งเธอก็พยายามมันเต็มที่แล้ว ส่วนในการทดสอบครั้งที่ 2 เธอได้ 3 คะแนนจากเต็ม 8 คะแนน ผมรู้สึกชื่นชมในความพยายามของเธอเป็นอย่างมาก และในการทดสอบครั้งที่ 3 เป็นการพัฒนาครั้งที่ดีกว่าครั้งที่ผ่านมาทั้งหมด

มันเป็นเรื่องที่อันตรายถ้าเราจะโฟกัสที่คะแนนสุดท้ายของแฮม คะแนนของแฮมนั้นน่าประทับใจและแฮมก็ควรภาคภูมิใจกับมัน แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้แฮมเป็นนักเรียนที่ยอดเยี่ยมและแตกต่างไปจากคนอื่นคือ กระบวนการในการได้มาซึ่งความสำเร็จนั้นต่างหาก ในครั้งแรกแฮมพยายามอ่านหนังสือและทำแบบฝึกหัด ซึ่งเธอรู้สึกว่าเธอยังเข้าใจบทเรียนได้ไม่ครบถ้วน เธอเลยทำแบบฝึกหัดมากขึ้นเพื่อเรียนรู้ให้มากขึ้น เมื่อแฮมรู้สึกว่าเธอพัฒนามากขึ้นแต่ก็ยังไม่แน่ใจในเนื้อหาบางส่วน เธอเลยลองค้นหาวิธีการเรียนรู้อื่น ๆ โดยใช้ข้อมูลการเรียนที่แตกต่างออกไป เธอลองเปลี่ยนวิธีโดยการทำแบบฝึกหัดอีกครั้งและหยุดพักเปลี่ยนไปทำงานอื่น ๆ ที่เธอต้องทำในวันนั้นต่อ 

ความพยายามของแฮมพิสูจน์ก็สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความพยายามเช่นเดียวกันของนักเรียนชั้นY10 ที่ยอดเยี่ยมของเรา โดยปกติเรามักให้ความสนใจไปที่คะแนนเป็นหลัก ซึ่งจะเป็นเกณฑ์ในการเข้าสู่มหาวิทยาลัยและใช้ในการสมัครงาน แต่ปัจจุบันนี้ มหาวิทยาลัยระดับโลกและบริษัทชั้นนำได้เริ่มให้ความสำคัญของกระบวนการ วิธี และความพยายามที่ผู้สมัครทุ่มเทจนประสบผลสำเร็จ รวมถึงคุณค่าของความมุ่งมั่น ความสามาถในการปรับตัว การคิดวิเคราะห์ และความอุตสาหะมากขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่ดีเพราะค่านิยมเหล่านี้ทุกคนสามารถทำมันได้ โดยไม่ต้องวัดค่าความฉลาดหรือเกรดเฉลี่ย

ความสำเร็จของแฮมในครั้งนี้เกิดจากกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ของเธอเอง ซึ่งก็คือกระบวนการทำความเข้าใจ ความสามารถในการปรับใช้ความรู้ที่มี ความสามารถในการแก้ไขปัญหา ความทะเยอะทะยานในการพัฒนาตนเอง และความไม่ย่อท้อไม่ยอมแพ้ต่ออุปสรรค โดยเธอจะไม่ปล่อยให้ความพยายามที่ล้มเหลว 2-3ครั้ง มาทำให้เธอหมดกำลังใจในการเรียนรู้ แฮมเป็นนักเรียนที่ยอดเยี่ยมและผมภูมิใจที่มีเธอเป็นนักเรียนของผม แฮมไม่ได้เป็นคนที่ยอดเยี่ยมที่สุดเพียงคนเดียวและผมก็รู้สึกภาคภูมิใจเช่นกันที่มีนักเรียนตัวอย่างมากมายที่ผมสามารถเลือกมาพิสูจน์ให้เห็นว่าพวกเขามีเส้นทางในการเติมเต็มศักยภาพของพวกเขาได้อย่างไร

คำถามท้ายบทความนี้คือ “อะไรคือสิ่งที่ดึงรั้งเราเอาไว้จากการประสบความสำเร็จแบบแฮม?” ซึ่งคำตอบนั้นง่ายมากสำหรับพวกเราหลาย ๆ คนคือ “ไม่มีอะไรเลยที่จะสามารถรั้งพวกเขาไว้ได้จากความสำเร็จ”
