I’m both excited and humbled to be joining the team of teachers here at the Denla British School, Bangkok. First impressions, wow. The facilities at DBS are both impeccable and impressive. A towering billboard and magnificent arched gateway leads to a series of world class state of the art buildings. Beautifully landscaped and set back from the outside world this is a calm oasis for learning. A team of highly experienced, international teachers are supported by kind, thorough and knowledgeable DBS teams (HR, Marketing, Finance) and best of all are the students themselves; super intelligent, bilingual, polite and motivated. This is without doubt, the happiest school that I have ever visited. I feel immensely proud to be here as the Teacher of Art.
Art & 7 Years Higher Education.
My own education, well Art has always been the subject that makes the most sense to me. Why? Because, there is no one answer but like life itself there are options, choices and decisions. To study Art I ventured college into higher education for a further 7 years: a Foundation / (Winchester School of Art) / BA Honours Degree / The Kent Institute of Art & Design (Time Based Media), a Postgraduate / The University of Dundee (Electronic Imaging), Research (Creativity & Non Linear Editing) for MSc MultiMedia University, KL, Malaysia and PGCE Teacher Training, University of Reading (Specialising Art & Design). When looking for work I could then offer key skills: Fine Art, drawing, painting, sculpture and Digital Art, Photography, Video Production, Video Editing, Animation and Journalism.
Art taught me to be flexible.
Work Experience
After graduating from University, my first job was as a Ship’s Photographer in the USA. Onboard SS Majestic and SS Starship both luxury cruiser liners, each a floating city. Teams of live aboard photographers sailed between Ports Miami, Cape Canaveral and Nassau in the Bahamas. My role, to produce high end vacation images. Fast paced and furious, the experience taught me how to work at speed, deal with rotations of thousands upon thousands of passengers, to frame a shot professionally, to develop film and to print. At the end of an exhaustive contract my attention turned from the west to the east towards Singapore and Indonesia.
A lucky break came in Jakarta with a job offer to work as an assistant director and off-line editor for YTC (Yasawirya Tama Cipta Indonesia’s first integrated audio-visual production centre. A pioneering company, YTC was contracted to promote Indonesia internationally through a series of video installations screened ASEAN, APEC and NAM Non-Aligned Movement. Ambitious regional Economic conferences attended by Presidents, Prime Ministers and Asia’s Senior Statesmen.
From marketing and promotion with YTC, I switched to TV News broadcasting with the offer of a job at TVRI – Televisi Republik Indonesia (Indonesia’s state owned Television News). The English News Service provided the expat community residing in Jakarta with a daily news report. My role was as the script editor, responsible for overseeing the scripts read out by the TV presenters. It is in the newsroom at TVRI where I met and fell in love with my beautiful wife Enny Yuliana.
Late 90s / 2000s were unsettled times in Asia. Wanting a more dynamic, hands-on role in TV journalism I switched from TVRI to Reuters TV News. While expats were boarding flights and evacuating, fleeing the social upheaval my role was to stay and document. A typical day would be equipped with a video camera and mobile – I’d jump on the back of a motorbike. A Reuter’s rider would then navigate the busy streets to flashpoints between students, rioters and the army. Tear gas, rubber bullets, shopping malls set alight – this was both scary and exhilarating. Turbulent times that brought down two Indonesian presidents. At Reuters, I learnt to tell the story through a sequence of images: establishing shots, close ups, mid shots, sound bites. Editing and satelit transfer.
Technology turned digital and to upgrade my wife, Enny and I left Indonesia for Malaysia. We enrolled at The Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya. High tech, high spec MMU is still today at the forefront of Malaysia’s technology drive. A University Program, an Enterprise Zone, a Business Hub, Cyberjaya also became the new centre for government. The focus of my research at MMU was into ‘Creativity / Digital Non-Linear Editing.
2004-2021 Teaching
Following the birth of our beautiful daughter Alethea, we returned to the UK. I worked as a freelance cameraman and editor for a company in London then in 2003 enrolled at Reading University, completed a PGCE (specialising in Art & Design). In 2004 started teaching at John Hanson Community School, Hampshire. At KS3, I taught Art & Design and ICT and at KS4 I taught a combination of subjects: GCSE Art & Design, GCSE ICT, BTEC Creative Media and I Coordinated GCSE Photography for 7 years
I am extremely proud of my time at John Hanson. At JH, I learnt the craft of teaching. Learning to teach young people takes time: As teachers we are also learners. We learn to adapt to young minds and their own individual styles of learning. As teachers learn new teaching practises through CPDs, we learn to liaise with parents and we learn how to set and assess according to examination boards.
Art & Design and Photography was and still is the most popular subject choice for students at JH choosing their GCSE option. To enrich programs taught school trips included visits to Tate Modern, the Royal Academy and the National Portrait London and an annual excursion to Paris, to The Louvre and Pompidou Centre.
Teaching is a privilege and teaching students to become creative is immensely rewarding.

Hobbies / Interests
I love to travel, the world is a giant classroom. With our daughter Alethea now in her 2 year at UAL (University Arts, London) we now have more time. On my days off you’ll find me walking, cycling or on a motorbike exploring with a camera in hand. Taking photographs and filming, from jungles to backstreets, the more remote the better. I also to make street art. Why street art? Well there’s an honesty, spontaneity and originality to street art. It’s accessible and if done well street art can enrich the environment that we live in. For example Shoreditch in London, Georgetown, Malaysia and Old Town Penang, Thailand.
Street Art: I made a life statue of my daughter aged 6. She still sits by the river in Salisbury City Centre. Passersby like to stop and to photograph the statue. Encouraged, I put forward a proposal to make a series of 9 life size 3D printed statues based on inspiring local residents. These are to be ‘hidden’ around Salisbury. Visitors to the city can then explore the city’s historic backstreets and beautiful parks to find the figures. The Wiltshire District Council unanimously agreed to support the project and awarded £7000. Below, the first of 9 lifesize statues.
Vision for DBS.
My vision for Art & Design at The Denla British School, Bangkok is threefold.
- Firstly, Student Experience. to provide students with an exciting opportunity to develop skills, confidence and creativity. I want students to be passionate about Art, about ideas and about finding new and innovative ways to communicate. To begin, students learn the creative process by studying the work of other artists. They then practise skills to develop their own artistic voice. Students learn to problem solve, to be flexible, dynamic and to become critical thinkers. At DBS we provide a step by step foundation throughout the early years and in Years 10/11 this feeds through into the iGCSE Art & Design program.
- Secondary: New facilities, New subject: DBS is in the process of building a bespoke ART, Design and Music Facility. Art and Design as a faculty will need to grow. New classrooms will need new equipment and as part of the new A Level to be offered in 2022-3 we will need to offer Production tools: Photography, Cameras, Studio Lighting and Post Production Video Editing and Photoshop.
- DBS Marketing. Art as a subject needs to support The DBS Marketing Department – we need to provide Art. Examples of student work will need to be scaled up and presented in the DBS reception to impress visiting parents and prospective students. Art is visual and can be utilised to promote DBS locally, nationally and internationally. Large printed displays and digital displays. As well as still image board displays we need to introduce video, drone footage and time lapse photography. Output needs to include social media: YouTube, Instagram and Facebook platforms through which to share and promote.

ศิลปะและ 7 ปีของชีวิตศึกษาในระดับมหาวิทยาลัย
ศิลปะคือวิชาที่ผมมองว่าเหมาะกับตัวเองที่สุด ทำไมน่ะเหรอ? ก็เพราะว่าศิลปะนั้นไม่มีคำตอบตายตัว ศิลปะก็เหมือนชีวิตที่เต็มไปด้วยทางเลือกและการตัดสินใจ ผมเลือกศึกษาศิลปะต่ออีก 7 ปีในระดับมหาวิทยาลัย เริ่มจากศึกษาระดับพื้นฐานที่ Winchester School of Art ต่อด้วยวุฒิปริญญาตรีเกียรตินิยม ที่ The Kent Institute of Art & Design (Time Based Media) ต่อด้วยหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรที่สูงกว่าปริญญาตรี (Postgraduate) ที่ The University of Dundee (Electronic Imaging) ต่อด้วยศึกษต่อระดับปริญญาโท โดยทำงานวิจัยเรื่อง Creativity & Non Linear Editing ที่ MultiMedia University กรุงกัวลาลัมเปร์ ประเทศมาเลเซีย และต่อด้วยการเรียนวุฒิครู PGCE Teacher Training ที่ University of Reading (Specialising Art & Design) และเมื่อถึงเวลาหางาน ผมก็นำทักษะสำคัญที่ผมได้เรียนรู้มา คือ วิจิตรศิลป์ วาดภาพ จิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม และศิลปะดิจิทัล การถ่ายภาพ ผลิตวิดีโอ ตัดต่อวิดีโอ แอนิเมชั่น และวารสารศาสตร์ มาประกอบอาชีพ
ศิลปะสอนให้ผมเป็นคนที่ยืดหยุ่นปรับตัวได้ดี
ประสบการณ์การทำงาน
หลังเรียนจบจากมหาวิทยาลัย ผมก็เริ่มอาชีพแรกด้วยการเป็นช่างภาพประจำเรือสำราญหรู SS Majestic และ SS Stars ในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา สถานที่ทำงานนี้เปรียบเสมือนเมืองลอยน้ำ ทีมช่างภาพบนเรือได้เดินทางล่องทะเลระหว่าง Ports Miami, Cape Canaveral และ Nassau ในหมู่เกาะ Bahamas หน้าที่ของผมในขณะนั้นคือการผลิตภาพที่สื่อให้เห็นการพักตากอากาศสุดหรู มันเป็นการทำงานที่รวดเร็วและกดดันอย่างมาก ซึ่งประสบการณ์นั้นสอนให้ผมรู้จักการทำงานให้เร็ว ท่ามกลางผู้โดยสารหลายพันคนที่หมุนเวียนและปลี่ยนแปลงตลอดเวลา ผมต้องถ่ายรูปและล้างภาพออกมาให้ได้แบบมืออาชีพ หลังจากหมดสัญญาจ้าง ผมก็หันหลังให้กับฝั่งตะวันตกและหันมาทำงานทางฝั่งตะวันออกของโลกแทน นั่นคือที่สิงคโปร์และอินโดนีเซีย
โชคดีคือระหว่างที่ผมอยู่ที่กรุงจาการ์ตา ผมได้รับข้อเสนอให้ทำงานในฐานะผู้ข่วยผู้กำกับและบรรณาธิการออฟไลน์ให้แก่บริษัท YTC (Yasawirya Tama Cipta) ศูนย์การผลิตภาพและเสียงแบบบูรณาการแห่งแรกของอินโดนีเซีย เป็นบริษัทรุ่นบุกเบิกที่ได้รับมอบหมายให้ทำสื่อประชาสัมพันธ์โปรโมตประเทศอินโดนีเซียให้นานาชาติได้รับรู้ ผ่านการผลิตวิดิโอสำหรับการการประชุม ASEAN APEC และ NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) รวมถึงการประชุมระดับภูมิภาคด้านเศรษฐกิจที่ผู้เข้าร่วมเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐระดับสูงของเอเชีย ทั้งนายกรัฐมนตรี ประธาน และผู้บริหาร
หลังจากทำงานด้านการตลาดกับ YTC ผมก็เปลี่ยนมาทำงานด้านสื่อสารมวลชนที่สถานีโทรทัศน์ TVRI – Televisi Republik Indonesia (สถานีข่าวของรัฐบาลอินโดนีเซีย) เป็นบริการข่าวภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อรายงานข่าวประจำวันให้แก่ชาวต่างชาติที่ทำงานอยู่ในกรุงจาการ์ตา ผมทำหน้าที่เป็นบรรณาธิการสคริปต์ข่าว เพื่อตรวจสคริปต์ข่าวที่ผู้ประกาศจะต้องอ่านในรายการโทรทัศน์ และที่สถานีข่าวที่ TVRI นี้เองที่ผมได้พบรัก Enny Yuliana กับภรรยาคนสวยของผม
ในช่วงปลายยุค 90 จนถึง 2000 เป็นช่วงที่สถานการณ์บ้านเมืองในภูมิภาคเอเชียนั้นไม่แน่นอน เกิดเหตุประท้วงต่อต้านรัฐบาลในอินโดนีเซีย ส่วนผมก็ต้องการทำงานข่าวที่ท้าทายมากกว่านี้ ผมเลยเปลี่ยนงานจาก TVRI ไปอยู่ที่สำนักข่าว Reuters TV News ซึ่งในขณะที่ชาวต่างชาติต่างพากันจองเที่ยวบินและอพยพออกจากประเทศเพื่อหนีเหตุขัดแย้งรุนแรง ผมกลับอยู่ที่นี่เพื่อบันทึกเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น การทำงานของผมในช่วงนั้นคือการเตรียมพร้อมอยู่ตลอดเวลา พกกล้องวิดิโอและโทรศัพท์มือถือ กระโดดซ้อนท้ายมอเตอร์ไซของเจ้าหน้าที่ Reuters เพื่อที่จะได้ฝ่าเข้าไปยังถนนที่กำลังเกิดเหตุประท้วงระหว่างนักเรียนนักศึกษา ผู้ก่อเหตุจลาจล และทหาร เพื่อที่ผมจะได้บันทึกเหตุการณ์ สถานการณ์ครั้งนั้นรุนแรง น่ากลัวและน่าตื่นเต้น เกิดเหตุยิงแก๊สน้ำตา กระสุนยาง และเพลิงไหม้ตามห้างร้านต่าง ๆ เหตุประท้วงดังกล่าวส่งผลให้ประธานาธิบดีอินโดนีเซีย 2 คนสูญเสียอำนาจ ส่วนการทำงานที่ Reuters ในตอนนั้นก็สอนให้ผมได้รู้จักศิลปะแห่งการเล่าเรื่อง ผ่านการลำดับภาพ ถ่ายภาพใกล้-กลาง-ไกล รวมทั้งยังได้เรียนรู้เรื่องการตัดต่อและส่งภาพผ่านสัญญาณดาวเทียมด้วย
จากนั้นเทคโนโลนีก็เปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งใหญ่ไปสู่ยุคดิจิทัล ซึ่งผมและภรรยาของผมได้ย้ายจากอินโดนีเซียไปอยู่มาเลเซีย เราเข้าเรียนที่ The Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยของมาเลเซียที่มีชื่อเสียงด้านเทคโนโลยีอย่างมากและยังเป็นผู้ขับเคลื่อนอุตสาหกรรมเทคโนโลยีของมาเลเซียด้วย ซึ่งนอกจากเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยแล้ว MMU ยังเป็นศูนย์กลางของนักธุรกิจและศูนย์กลางรัฐบาล ส่วนผมก็เลือกทำงานวิจัยที่นี่ด้าน Creativity / Digital Non-Linear Editing
เริ่มต้นสู่วิชาชีพครู ปี พ.ศ. 2547-2564
หลังจากเรามีลูกสาว Alethea ด้วยกัน เราก็กลับไปยังประเทศอังกฤษ ผมทำงานเป็นช่างภาพและช่างตัดวิดิโออิสระให้กับบริษัทแห่งหนึ่งในกรุงลอนดอน จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2546 ผมก็ได้เข้าเรียนที่ Reading University และสำเร็จวุฒิการศึกษาสำหรับการประกอบวิชาชีพครู เชี่ยวชาญด้านศิลปะและการออกแบบ ในปี พ.ศ. 2547 ผมก็เริ่มสอนที่ John Hanson Community School ในเมือง Hampshire ผมสอน Art & Design และ ICT ให้แก่นักเรียนระดับชั้น KS3 และสอน GCSE Art & Design, GCSE ICT, BTEC Creative Media ให้แก่นักเรียนระดับชั้น KS4 และให้การสนับสนุน GCSE Photography นาน 7 ปี
ผมภูมิใจอย่างยิ่งกับช่วงเวลาที่ได้สอนอยู่ที่ John Hanson ที่นี่ผมได้เรียนรู้ทักษะการสอน การเรียนรู้ที่จะสอนเด็ก ๆ นั้นใช้เวลา ในฐานะครู เราก็เป็นผู้เรียนเช่นกัน เราเรียนรู้ที่จะปรับให้เข้ากับจิตใจของคนเด็ก ๆ และรูปแบบการเรียนรู้ของพวกเขาแต่ละคน ในขณะที่ครูก็ต้องเรียนรู้แนวทางการสอนใหม่ ๆ ผ่านบทเรียนการพัฒนาอาชีพ (CPD) ครูยังเรียนรู้วิธีการสื่อสารกับผู้ปกครอง และเรียนรู้วิธีการตั้งเกณฑ์และประเมินนักเรียนตามแนวทางของคณะกรรมการออกข้อสอบ

งานอดิเรกและความสนใจด้านอื่น ๆ
ผมชอบท่องเที่ยว โลกคือห้องเรียนขนาดมหึมา ตอนนี้ผมมีเวลาว่างมากขึ้นเพราะลูกสาวของผมโตแล้วและเรียนอยู่ปี 2 ที่ University Arts London โดยในวันหยุด ผมมักชอบออกไปเดิน ปั่นจักรยาน ขี่มอเตอร์ไซพร้อมพกกล้องไป ด้วยเพื่อถ่ายภาพและวิดิโอบันทึกเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ในป่าไปจนถึงถนนเล็ก ๆ ที่ห่างไกลจากเมืองใหญ่ ผมยังทำพวกสตรีทอาร์ต ทำไมต้องสตรีทอาร์ตน่ะหรือ? ก็เพราะว่าสตรีทอาร์ตมีความจริงใจ เป็นธรรมชาติ และเป็นตัวของตัวเอง เราสามารถเข้าถึงสตรีทอาร์ตได้ง่ายและถ้าทำให้ดี ศิลปะตามท้องถนนพวกนี้ก็สามารถส่งเสริมสภาพแวดล้อมในละแวกที่เราอาศัยอยู่ได้ เช่น ศิลปะบริเวณย่าน Shoreditch ในกรุงลอนดอน Georgetown ในมาเลเซีย และ Old Town ในปีนัง
สตรีทอาร์ต: ผมสร้างรูปปั้นจำลองลูกสาวของผมตอนอายุ 6 ขวบขนาดเท่าตัวจริง โดยตั้งไว้ที่ริมแม่น้ำบริเวณ Salisbury City Centre ทุกวันนี้ผู้คนที่สัญจรไปมาก็ยังชอบหยุดและถ่ายรูปกับรูปปั้นของผมเสมอ ผมยังยื่นเสนอกับสถาท้องถิ่นถึงแผนการสร้างรูปปั้น 3 มิติขนาดเท่าของจริงจำนวนอีก 9 ชิ้น โดยอิงแรงบันดาลใจมาจากชาวท้องถิ่นของเมืองนี้ รูปปั้นเหล่านี้จะถูก ‘ซ่อน’ อยู่รอบ ๆ Salisbury และนักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยือนก็จะพบรูปปั้นเหล่านี้ซ่อนอยู่ตามถนนสายประวัติศาสตร์และสวนสาธารณะของเมืองได้ สภาท้องถิ่นมีมติเป็นเอกฉันท์สนับสนุนโครงการของผมและมอบทุน 7,000 ปอนด์ และภาพด้านล่างนี้คือหนึ่งใน 9 รูปปั้นนั้น
วิสัยทัศน์ต่อโรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS
วิสัยทัศน์ของผมในเรื่องของศิลปะและการออกแบบที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS มีทั้งหมด 3 ข้อ
1. ประสบการณ์ของนักเรียน: เพื่อให้นักเรียนมีโอกาสที่น่าตื่นเต้นในการพัฒนาทักษะ ความมั่นใจ และความคิดสร้างสรรค์ ผมต้องการให้นักเรียนมีความหลงใหลในศิลปะ ในแนวคิด และในการค้นหาวิธิใหม่ ๆ และสร้างสรรค์ในการสื่อสาร ในตอนแรก นักเรียนจะเรียนรู้กระบวนการการสร้างสรรค์โดยศึกษาผลงานของศิลปินคนอื่น ๆ ก่อน จากนั้นนักเรียนจะต้องฝึกฝนทักษะเพื่อพัฒนาแนวทางศิลปะของตนเอง นักเรียนจะได้เรียนรู้ที่จะแก้ปัญหา ยืดหยุ่น หลากหลาย และรู้จักคิดวิเคราะห์ ที่โรงเรียน DBS เราจัดการเรียนการสอนแบบเตรียมพื้นฐานทีละขั้นตอนทีละตอนให้กับนักเรียนในช่วงชั้นปีแรก ๆ และในชั้นปี Year 10/11 เราก็จะนำพาพวกเขาเข้ารู้การเรียน iGCSE Art & Design
