Mr Peter Browne – Head of Mathematics

My name is Peter Browne, and I am the Head of Mathematics here at DBS. Although, I have always had a love of teaching. I have not always been a teacher and instead started my career in the electrical engineering field. Although very different from teaching, these years taught me many of the skills that I apply to what I do today. Analysing data and problem-solving are a couple of these. A memory that always stands out is a quote from one of my managers during this time. He told me in a fairly matter fact manner: “The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop being useful.”. This took me back a step initially but made an impression and has become something I try to live for and impart to my students, just in a less straightforward manner. 

For when you take this knowledge on board, you start to see opportunities to expand your knowledge each and every day. Lifelong learning takes menial, boring jobs and gives them meaning. 

Since switching to teaching, I have had the pleasure of teaching across three separate continents. Starting my career in South Africa, where teaching classes of 30 or more students formed my foundations. From there, Theresa Browne (my wife) and I moved to Malaysia, where we started our international careers in Kuala Lumpur for two years before moving to Johor Bahru, where we settled for an additional five. 

I have been fortunate enough to have various opportunities over my teaching career, such as leading international trips, being the Head of Assessments and heading up the switch to Google for education. None of these roles have been as rewarding as leading the development of Mathematics departments and watching those beautiful ah-ha moments in students who first learn the beauty of Mathematics. 

Moving to Thailand has been something Theresa and I have wanted to do for many years, and although we have only just arrived in Thailand, we have always been in love with this country and its wonderful people and have visited here at every opportunity. Moving to a new country is always daunting and comes with many unknowns, but if these last few months at DBS has shown us anything, it was to confirm that our feelings were right all along.

ผมชื่อ ปีเตอร์ บราวน์ เป็นหัวหน้าแผนกวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS ผมรักในการสอนหนังสือมาตลอด อย่างไรก็ตามผมไม่ได้เป็นครูมาตั้งแต่แรก ผมเริ่มต้นอาชีพด้วยการทำงานด้านวิศวกรรมอิเล็คทรอนิกส์ แน่นอนว่าสายอาชีพนี้ต่างจากอาชีพครู แต่ผมก็ได้นำทักษะที่ผมได้เรียนรู้จากงานวิศวกรรมมาปรับใช้กับวิชาชีพครูของผมในทุกวันนี้ ทักษะที่ว่าก็รวมถึงการทักษะการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลและทักษะการแก้ไขปัญหา ผมยังจำคำสอนของผู้จัดการของผมในครั้งที่ผมทำอาชีพนั้นได้อยู่ เขาบอกกับผมอย่างตรงไปตรงมาว่า “คุณหยุดเรียนรู้เมื่อใด คุณก็หมดประโยชน์เมื่อนั้น” สิ่งที่เขาพูดกับผมครั้งนั้นทำให้ผมอึ้งไปเลย แต่มันก็ทำให้ผมประทับใจจนนำคำพูดนั้นมาเป็นหลักการในการดำเนินชีวิตของผม และเป็นหลักการที่ผมส่งต่อให้นักเรียนของผมด้วย แต่ผมจะบอกหลักการนี้กับนักเรียนของผมในแบบที่นุ่มนวลกว่าอดีตผู้จัดการของผมสักหน่อย

เมื่อคุณใช้ชีวิตโดยมีทัศนคติว่าคุณต้องเรียนรู้เพื่อพัฒนาตัวเองอยู่ตลอดเวลา การใช้ชีวิตแบบนี้จะทำให้คุณเริ่มมองเห็นโอกาสในการเพิ่มพูนความรู้ของคุณได้ในทุกวัน การเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตนั้นยังทำให้งานที่น่าเบื่อมีความความหมายขึ้นอีกด้วย

นับตั้งแต่ที่ผมเปลี่ยนอาชีพมาเป็นครู ผมก็ยินดีมากเพราะได้มีโอกาสสอนหนังสือในหลายประเทศถึง 3 ทวีป ผมเริ่มสอนที่ประเทศแอฟริกาใต้ก่อน โดยสอนนักเรียนมากกว่า 30 คนในหลาย ๆ ชั้นเรียน จนทำให้ผมได้พัฒนาทักษะวิชาชีพครูของผม ที่แอฟริกาใต้ยังทำให้ผมได้พบกับ เทเรซ่า บราวน์ (ภรรยาของผม) และจากนั้นเราก็ย้ายมายังประเทศมาเลเซีย และเริ่มอาชีพในระดับนานาชาติของเรา เราสอนอยู่ที่กรุงกัวลาลัมเปอร์นาน 2 ปี จากนั้นเราก็ย้ายไปที่เมืองยะโฮบารูห์และสอนอยู่ที่นั่นอีก 5 ปี

ผมโชคดีที่มีโอกาสมากมายในอาชีพการสอนของผม เช่น ได้เป็นผู้นำทริปทัศนศึกษาต่างประเทศ เป็นหัวหน้าฝ่ายประเมินผลการศึกษา และเป็นผู้นำในการเปลี่ยนไปใช้ Google เพื่อการศึกษาด้วย แต่ก็ไม่มีบทบาทใดที่ผมรู้สึกรักมันมากเท่ากับการได้เป็นผู้นำในการพัฒนาภาควิชาคณิตศาสตร์ และการได้เห็นช่วงเวลาที่สวยงามเวลาที่นักเรียนเข้าใจในบทเรียนและคิดเลขได้เป็นครั้งแรก

การย้ายมาประเทศไทยเป็นสิ่งที่เทเรซ่าและผมอยากทำมาหลายปีแล้ว และถึงแม้ว่าเราเพิ่งย้ายมาอยู่ประเทศไทย แต่เราก็รักประเทศนี้ รักผู้คนที่นี่ และมาเที่ยวไทยเมื่อมีโอกาส การย้ายมาอยู่ประเทศใหม่นั้นน่ากังวลเสมอ เพราะมีสิ่งที่เราไม่รู้มากมาย แต่ช่วงสองสามเดือนที่ผ่านมาที่ DBS แสดงอะไรให้เราเห็น มันก็เป็นการยืนยันว่าความรู้สึกของเรานั้นถูกต้องมาตลอด
