A few months ago, a good friend challenged our move to Nonthaburi!  “It doesn’t get any better than this,” he said, referring to our life in a picturesque harbourside village on the South Coast of England. He was missing the point!  

Joining DBS was an easy decision for us.  The 4 DBS pillars are perfectly aligned with our reasons for moving our young family across the world.  We believe strongly in developing a global perspective with community at the heart of our decisions.  We feel privileged that our three daughters will grow up with an understanding and respect for Thai culture, whilst learning in a setting of academic excellence.  

I started my teaching career in Camden Town, North London.  I had enjoyed my university years in the capital, gaining a BSc in Pharmaceutical Chemistry before following the pathway into teaching with a PGCE at King’s College, University of London.  I fell in love with Science teaching at the school founded by the pioneering British Headmistress, Frances Mary Buss. That love for science education has grown exponentially over my career as I have witnessed the beautiful ‘Wow!’ moments that science lessons deliver.  I understand the opportunities that are available to students with a strong science background and I make it my mission to equip all learners with this high value currency.  

After London, I took my first international job in Bermuda.  I enjoyed a wonderful few years there before returning to the UK where I have worked in a variety of leadership roles in secondary and further education. I am currently completing an MSc in Population Health, a field of science which I find fascinating.

The narrow windows I find between a busy family and work life are filled with training for triathlons. I have been selected twice to represent Great Britain at age group level and have completed 8 Ironman events.  I believe that maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is one of the most important messages we can share with our children and this is omnipresent in my classroom experience.

So back to my sceptical friend in the UK (and the many others who raised an eyebrow as we packed up for a new life in Thailand).  When Polly and I cycled around the world for our honeymoon in 2010 we covered 16,000 miles and cycled through more than 30 countries (Thailand being one of them).  Many of those 365 days around the world were not ‘better’ than those we enjoyed at home, but they were certainly different, and that is the point!  Those differences help us to grow and understand.  This allows you to contribute more with a truly global perspective. That is why we are so excited to be joining DBS.

เมื่อไม่กี่เดือนก่อน ก่อนที่ผมจะย้ายมาอยู่นนทบุรี เพื่อนของผมได้ท้าทายผมเอาไว้ว่า “มันก็คงไม่ดีไปกว่านี้หรอก” ซึ่งเขากำลังพูดถึงชีวิตของผมตอนที่เราอาศัยอยู่ในหมู่บ้านริมท่าเรืออันงดงามบนชายฝั่งทางใต้ของอังกฤษ ผมขอพูดเลยว่าสิ่งที่เขาพูดตอนนั้น มันไม่ใช่เลย!

การตัดสินใจเข้าทำงานที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS เป็นการตัดสินใจที่ง่ายมากสำหรับผม วิสัยทัศน์ 4 ข้อของ DBS นั้นสอดคล้องกับเหตุผลที่จะทำให้ผมและครอบครัวย้ายไปอีกซีกหนึ่งของโลก เหตุผลหลักในการตัดสินใจของพวกเรา คือ เรามีความเชื่ออย่างแรงกล้าต่อการพัฒนาทัศนคติระดับสากลไปพร้อม ๆ กับชุมชนท้องถิ่น  ผมรู้สึกเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่ลูกสาวของผมทั้งสามคนจะได้เติบโตมาด้วยความเข้าใจและความเคารพในวัฒนธรรมไทยพร้อมกับได้เรียนในโรงเรียนที่เป็นเลิศทางวิชาการ

ผมเริ่มชีวิตการเป็นครูที่เมือง Camden ทางตอนเหนือของ London ส่วนในช่วงเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย ผมเรียนอยู่ในเมืองหลวง สนุกไปกับการเรียน และจบมาพร้อมปริญญาวิทยาศาสตรบัณฑิตสาขาเภสัชเคมี ก่อนที่จะเดินตามเส้นทางสายวิชาชีพครูด้วยการเรียนหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรครุศาสตร์ขั้นสูง (The Postgraduate Certificate in Education;PGCE) ที่ King’s College, University of London  ผมรู้ตัวว่าตนเองรักในการสอนวิทยาศาสตร์นับตั้งแต่ที่ผมได้เข้าทำงานที่โรงเรียนซึ่งก่อตั้งโดย Frances Mary Buss ครูใหญ่สตรีผู้บุกเบิกด้านการศึกษาชาวอังกฤษ ความรักต่ออาชีพครูวิทยาศาสตร์ของผมเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างทวีคูณโดยเฉพาะเวลาที่ผมได้สัมผัสกับความรู้สึก ‘ว้าว!’ ที่บทเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์มอบให้เรา ผมรู้ว่านักเรียนที่มีความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์เป็นอย่างดีจะได้รับโอกาสทางการศึกษามากมาย ดังนั้นเป้าหมายหลักของผมคือการจัดการเรียนการสอนที่มีคุณภาพสูงให้กับนักเรียนทุกคน 

หลังจากทำงานเป็นครูที่ London ผมก็มีโอกาสไปทำงานในต่างประเทศเป็นครั้งแรกที่ Bermuda ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่อยู่ที่นั่นผมสนุกมาก จากนั้นผมก็บินกลับมาทำงานที่อังกฤษอีกครั้ง ซึ่งผมได้ทำงานในตำแหน่งหัวหน้าระดับมัธยมศึกษาและแนวทางการศึกษาต่อ ปัจจุบันผมกำลังจะสำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโทวิทยาศาสตร์ด้านสุขภาพประชากร ซึ่งเป็นสาขาวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ผมเห็นว่าน่าสนใจอย่างยิ่ง

ช่วงเวลาว่างสั้น ๆ ของผมระหว่างการบาลานซ์ชีวิตครอบครัวและการทำงานนั้น ผมเติมช่วงเวลาว่างนั้นด้วยการฝึกฝนเพื่อลงแข่งไตรกีฬา ผมได้รับเลือกเป็นตัวแทนของสหราชอาณาจักรถึง 2 ครั้งในการแข่งขันกีฬาตามระดับกลุ่มอายุ และยังได้ร่วมแข่งไตรกีฬาคนเหล็กทั้ง 8 รายการด้วย ผมเชื่อว่าการดูแลตนเองให้มีสุขภาพดีและมีไลฟ์สไตล์ที่กระฉับกระเฉง เป็นหนึ่งในสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุดที่เราสามารถส่งเสริมให้เด็ก ๆ ทำตาม และผมก็ได้สอดแทรกทัศนคตินี้ให้แก่นักเรียนของผมเสมอ

ย้อนกลับมาที่เพื่อนที่ขี้สงสัยของผมที่อังกฤษ (และอีกหลาย ๆ คนที่เลิกคิ้วขึ้นด้วยความไม่ไว้ใจในขณะที่ผมกำลังเก็บข้าวของเพื่อเตรียมเริ่มชีวิตใหม่ที่ประเทศไทย) ผมกับพอลลี่เคยปั่นจักรยานรอบโลกในช่วงฮันนีมูนของเราในปี ค.ศ. 2010 เราปั่นจักรยานรวมเป็นระยะทาง 16,000 ไมล์ ครอบคลุมกว่า 30 ประเทศ (รวมถึงประเทศไทยด้วย) การเดินทางไปทั่วโลกนานกว่า 365 วันในครั้งนั้นเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ไม่ได้ ‘ดีกว่า’ การที่เราอยู่ที่บ้าน แต่แน่นอนว่ามันเป็นประสบการณ์ที่แตกต่างกว่า และนั่นล่ะคือประเด็นสำคัญ! ความแตกต่างเหล่านั้นช่วยให้เราเติบโตและเข้าใจโลกมากขึ้น สิ่งเหล่านี้ช่วยให้คุณมีมุมมองที่เป็นสากลอย่างแท้จริง และนั่นคือเหตุผลที่ผมและครอบครัวรู้สึกตื่นเต้นมากที่จะได้ทำงานที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS
