“I am Thai-British, grew up in both countries where art was always a part of my upbringing. At school, the art studio always felt like a positive space. I graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in design and immediately went off to be a creative person within spaces that were available to me at the time in London: I worked with painters and in set and costume departments in theatres for ballets and operas, I assisted on undergraduate design programmes and formed my own art collective.”
“In Bangkok I worked with Thai production companies and eventually as an art teacher at Harrow International School where I remained for 9 years. I felt that students and parents valued my work and ever since then I have been looking for other platforms to practice as an art educator. I stepped out of international school teaching for a few years to open my own independent art school.”
“Outside of my work with DBS, I am the director and teacher at Paron School of Art. We offer curricula in drawing and painting to children, adolescents and adults in small class sizes. We are located on Sukhumvit 26 and have just recently celebrated our studio’s 7th birthday.”
“When it comes to my own experiences of enjoying art, I have a big appetite: I want to see and feel everything. Wafting through large volumes of work and seeing what catches my eye that particular day is heaven and am grateful to a new culture of art festivals for being those Bangkok platforms for beautiful breadths of art. It’s exciting to see what will emerge after these past months.”
“A big part of teaching a creative subject is in creating inspiring frameworks that will inform and enrich. I have always been a very active teacher but the past few months of online teaching has invited me to readdress our relationship with control. This is a landscape that wants us all to be more patient and deeper listeners. I am still learning when the right time is to trust and to let go.”
“It’s been an interesting time to be an art teacher through these past 2 years of the pandemic. There has been a sizable shift in where there is need for creative intervention. Given the particular climate, it’s never been easier for young people to find a comfortable media bubble to sit in and to be entertained. But that creates complacency. Art and Design plays an important role in helping us to reconsider what we choose to focus our attention on and how we want to shape the environment around us. I believe that being able to think like an artist is one of the most useful skills to have in twenty-first century living: it allows you to hone in on the layers of meaning and intention that are woven into every aspect of our lives. So we are creating the art classes here at DBS that tackle that.”
“I’m blessed to be living so close to my family home. Both my parents were academics but have since retired into uniquely creative spaces. Often a visit would be marked by touring dad’s art studio to see his new paintings and also to the kitchen to sample mum’s new culinary invention. I want our students to be able to create their own happiness in the way that my parents can.”
“ผมเป็นลูกครึ่งไทย-อังกฤษ เติบโตมาในทั้งสองประเทศโดยมีศิลปะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตผมมาตลอด ที่โรงเรียน ผมรู้สึกเสมอว่าสตูดิโอศิลปะคือพื้นที่ที่เต็มไปด้วยพลังบวก ผมสำเร็จการศึกษาจาก Central Saint Martins ด้านการออกแบบ และในทันที่ผมเรียนจบ ผมก็เข้าทำงานที่ London ในสายอาชีพครีเอทีฟ ทั้งได้ร่วมงานกับจิตรกร ทำงานในแผนกฉากและแผนกเครื่องแต่งกายตามโรงละครแสดงบัลเลต์และโรงละครโอเปร่า ผมยังได้เป็นผู้ช่วยดูแลหลักสูตรการออกแบบให้แก่นักศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี และจัดตั้งกลุ่มศิลปะของตัวเองขึ้นมาด้วย”
“ที่กรุงเทพฯ ผมได้ร่วมงานกับบริษัทโปรดักชั่นของไทยหลายแห่ง และในที่สุดผมก็ได้เป็นครูสอนศิลปะที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ Harrow ผมสอนอยู่ที่นั่นมานาน 9 ปี ซึ่งทำให้ผมรับรู้ได้ว่านักเรียนและผู้ปกครองมองเห็นถึงคุณค่าในงานของผม และตั้งแต่นั้นมาผมก็มองหาช่องทางอื่น ๆ ในการเป็นผู้ให้ความรู้ทางด้านศิลปะ ผมจึงตัดสินใจออกจากการสอนที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติมาสักสองสามปี เพื่อเปิดโรงเรียนสอนศิลปะเป็นของตัวเอง”
“นอกจากการทำงานที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติ DBS ผมยังเป็นผู้บริหารและครูที่โรงเรียนศิลปะภรณ (Paron School of Art) เรานำเสนอหลักสูตรการวาดภาพและระบายสีให้แก่เด็กเล็ก เด็กโต รวมถึงผู้ใหญ่ โดยแบ่งการเรียนการสอนเป็นกลุ่มเล็ก ๆ โรงเรียนของผมตั้งอยู่ที่สุขุมวิทซอย 26 และเมื่อไม่นานมานี้ เราเพิ่งฉลองครบรอบ 7 ปีการเปิดสตูดิโอด้วย”
“เมื่อพูดถึงประสบการณ์ของผมเองเกี่ยวกับงานศิลปะ ผมบอกได้เลยว่าผมมีความหลงใหลในศิลปะเป็นอย่างมาก ผมต้องการที่จะเห็นและรับรู้ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง การได้ทำงานหลาย ๆ อย่าง การได้มองเห็นสิ่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัวในแต่ละวัน สำหรับผมมันคือสวรรค์ และผมรู้สึกดีใจที่ได้เห็นการจัดเทศกาลศิลปะที่หลากหลายขึ้นในกรุงเทพฯ มันช่างน่าตื่นเต้นเสียจริง”
“ส่วนสำคัญของการสอนวิชาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับงานสร้างสรรค์ คือการใช้แรงบันดาลใจเพื่อก่อร่างสร้างผลงานให้เกิดประโยชน์ ผมเป็นครูที่มีความกระตือรือร้นมาตลอด แต่ช่วงหลัง ๆ มานี้ การสอนออนไลน์ได้ทำให้ผมกลับมามองตัวเองใหม่และควบคุมสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่เราสามารถกำหนดเองได้ สถานการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นทำให้เราทุกคนเรียนรู้ที่จะอดทนและเป็นผู้ฟังที่ดีขึ้น ส่วนผมก็ยังคงเรียนรู้ในตัวเองอยู่เสมอว่าเมื่อใดควรเชื่อมั่นและปล่อยวาง”
“นับว่าเป็นช่วงเวลาที่น่าสนใจมากของการเป็นครูสอนวิชาศิลปะในช่วงการระบาดครั้งใหญ่ใน 2 ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ สถานการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นทำให้เราจำเป็นที่จะต้องใช้ความคิดสร้างสรรค์เพิ่มมากขึ้น หากพิจารณาจากสภาพแวดล้อมโดยทั่วไปแล้ว มันไม่เคยง่ายเลยที่เยาวชนรุ่นใหม่จะสามารถหาช่องทางที่พวกเขาจะเข้าไปแล้วรู้สึกสบายใจและสนุก ศิลปะและการออกแบบมีบทบาทสำคัญในการช่วยให้เราสามารถเลือกว่าเราจะสนใจอะไรและทำให้เรามีวิธีการในการกำหนดสภาพแวดล้อมรอบตัวเรา ผมเชื่อว่าการที่เราสามารถคิดได้เหมือนศิลปินคือหนึ่งในทักษะที่มีประโยชน์ที่สุดสำหรับการใช้ชีวิตในศตวรรษที่ 21 สิ่งนี้จะช่วยให้เราสามารถเจาะลึกถึงถึงความหมายและความตั้งใจที่ถักทอเข้ากับทุกด้านของชีวิตเรา ดังนั้นเราจึงสร้างวิชาศิลปะที่ DBS เพื่อรับมือกับเรื่องนี้”
