Phonics Workshop for parents focusing on their children’s reading journey at school and ways parents can support them at home.

Mrs Sophie Berry – Head of Pre-Prep, Ms Rebecca Edwards – Head of EY, and Mrs Andrea Flynn – Head of Y1-Y2 led a phonics workshop for parents with Pre-Prep children to help parents discover the reading journey for children at DBS and to explore ways they can support them at home.

The teachers at DBS have been trained and are experts in delivering phonics lessons using the Read Write Inc programme – a UK based Phonics programme, approved by the UK Department of Education, and developed by Ruth Miskin, whose mission statement is: “Our mission is to teach every child to read and write, and to keep them reading. No exceptions.”

Children will learn by doing through many techniques used as a fundamental part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum such as Spoken Language and Reading Aloud via daily story times, Talk 4 Writing approach where teachers and children add key actions alongside key vocabulary from a particular story, Songs and Poems using familiar nursery rhymes as music helps children learn the sounds and meanings of words.

The goal of this workshop is not only to inform parents about what their children have learned in school, but also to teach about what they can do at home to support their children’s progress. Parents learned how to read with their children at home, how to create a home environment that supports their children’s learning space, how to talk to their children about school, and most importantly, how to understand that each child is unique, with different learning styles and development, at this workshop.

Parents and the school must work together to share our love of reading and develop your child’s reading ability to ensure they have a life-long love of reading and reach their full potential.
